A Breath of Fresh Air For America

Last night America was able to see Vice Presidential candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz go head to head in a debate. Ironically, the Vice Presidential debate was more presidential than the presidential debate itself. I think many Americans are happy with what they witnessed. For once viewers were able to see a civil and respectful debate, something that is very rare in this political day and age.

Both candidates did decently. It has been speculated whether both of these running mates were good picks for their respective candidate. Neither were expected to be picked, especially Walz. That said, this was many Americans’ first time truly hearing the Vice Presidential candidates and many will be pleased.

For the most part the moderators were fair, however there were times where bias was shown against JD Vance. For example his mic was cut while talking about the Biden administration’s immigration policy. This came after the moderators “fact checked”  Vance. It was agreed that the moderators would not fact check. That said, there were challenging questions for Tim Walz. Walz was pressed on the fact he claimed to be at the Tiananmen Square protest during the spring of 1989. This was not true, as Walz was not in Hong Kong until August. Walz stated that he can be a “knuckle head at times”. He did say that the trip changed his perspective on China. This was probably his worst moment of the night.

All and all, I think this debate was a breath of fresh air for Americans. For once we were able to see candidates civilly debate policy without being personal attacks and bickering. Perhaps this can become the norm again.
