The Second First Debate

Last night we got to see the second, but also the first debate of the general election. This time Donald Trump had to face a very different candidate… Kamala Harris. This time around though, Trump did not have the barn burner of a debate he would hope for.

Trump felt sloppy. It seemed both candidates resorted to personal attacks rather than policy. However as odd as it sounds I feel Harris did so in a more graceful manner. Her demeanor seems much more professional. I feel she portrayed herself in a manner that would be more appealing to Americans. However I still believe Harris once again failed to address policy and danced around it. It feels that what she says lacks substance. This seems to be common with her campaign. Perhaps leaving Americans in the dark on her policy is her strategy.

Even though Kamala Harris performed decently, it goes without saying she had a little bit of help. Throughout the night it was obvious that ABC moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis had bias in favor of Harris. On numerous occasions the moderators “fact checked” Trump, but consistently failed to give Harris the same treatment. In general Muir and Davis were harsher on Trump than Harris. While neither candidate gave an exemplary performance, it is no help if Americans cannot trust the moderators to be objective. It seems there was no winner in the debate, only losers. Those losers being the American people.
